the woman behind a successful man

There is a famous chinese saying goes like this: "At the back of a successful man, you would always find a woman,'' meaning it takes a really understanding woman to back up her man, understand him and take care of him for him to be successful. implying a subtle role woman plays in contributing to a man's success.
a friend of mine was reading news on the internet and found this picture:

I have no idea how careless I was! there were a million cameras on this internationally renowned pianist Lang Lang, I really should have been careful(print journalist doesn't like to be on any TV footage or pictures). When I was covering him becoming the first Hong Kong resident under it's quality migrant admission scheme introduced this year, I thought i was stnading right behind him so that I could avoid the cameras. but looks like these cameras were shooting from every possible angle. anyway, not sure how did i contribute to his success, but there i was, a woman standing behind a successful man. a reallly successful man at the age of 24 and wearing Louis Vuitton shoes! I don't even have a LV keychain!!!And I play the piano and 24 too!!!!lol...

anyway,my mom and friends and workmates were telling me that they saw me on TV and next's day's newspaper...sigh ....I have maintained such a clean record for a long time..finally it was broken by covering lang lang 's story.Anyway, this is memorable because it's the first working picture i have got so far. I looked kinda serious when I was taking notes in english and asking him questions in mandarin,huh?lol....

Baby Durjoy is suffering...

Doctors give hope to tot disfigured in acid attack

Wednesday, November 15, 2006

Twenty-two-month-old Durjoy Kumar Tarafdar is probably the world's youngest acid attack victim alive today.

His name means "invincible or difficult to defeat" and that's what he'll need to be to survive after being force- fed acid by relatives when he was less than 50-days-old in Bangladesh.

When he was found by his 25-year- old mother Etirani, Durjoy's lips were swollen, his clothes were burned, and skin around his mouth had turned black.

The attack was carried out by the child's jealous aunt and uncle who tried to kill him so their two daughters could inherit land rights under Hindu laws, according to Monira Rahmen, head of the Dhaka-based Acid Survivors' Foundation that brought Durjoy to Hong Kong for specialist treatment.

Durjoy's chin is attached to his upper chest, and his lips are almost closed.

He can't talk, breathe or drink normally because his internal oral area is completely disfigured.

"I was able to get one of my fingers inside [his mouth] ... a massive scar feels like a block of cement inside," said Professor Andrew Burd, chief of the plastic and reconstructive and aesthetic surgery unit at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Durjoy is being fed by a tube attached to his nose.

A breathing tube has been inserted into his throat but it might be forced out because the scar on his front neck is contracting while the back of his neck is growing normally, Burd said.

Durjoy, accompanied by his parents, is waiting to be operated on at Prince of Wales Hospital by a team of world- renowned surgeons, headed by Burd.

"We're hoping that by the time he attends school, Durjoy will be able to drink without dribbling, breathe properly and speak for people to understand. Without treatment, he's going to die. With treatment, he'll have a normal life expectancy," said Burd, adding several operations may be needed.

As for the medical fees, a day's hospitalization in Hong Kong for overseas nationals costs HK$3,300 and a day's stay in the intensive care unit costs HK$10,000.

It's estimated that Durjoy's first operation, medical care and six weeks' expenditure for the family here would cost US$50,000 (HK$390,000) - an amount the family and the Acid Survivors' Foundation cannot afford.

"He's at the absolute wrong age to receive such treatment - it either has to be younger than 18 months or more than three-years-old - but he's in a desperate situation," said Burd, adding that any operation could be risky because Durjoy "couldn't tolerate blood loss."

The first operation on Durjoy is expected to be carried out Wednesday.

According to Rahmen, acid attacks are common against women in Bangladesh who refuse marriage proposals and sexual acts, and against people involved in land, money or domestic disputes.

Donations for Durjoy are welcomed, and donors can call Jessica Yip at Prince of Wales Hospital's Department of Surgery on 2632-2952.

pretzel eyes

*************************************************************************************
when boredom gets out of hand, this is what's gonna happen...In University of Sydney's chemistry building.

you can forget about your scarf this winter

I did my geography well back in high school and still remember Hong Kong lies in a sub-tropical region where distinction among four seasons is not as obvious as of, say....Tokyo. However, one should still be able to feel the difference between summer and winter in what the HK government likes to refer itself as "Asia's World Class City".

OK, I accept the fact that it's never going to snow in Hong Kong (it still pisses me off from time to time when thinking about it), but come on...26 degrees celsius in Hong Kong today?!?

I'm sorry, but my general education background and logic tells me this is November in the sub-troppical region of the northern hemisphere and it's supposed to be cold~~~
What's worse is that Hong Kong is even hotter than Sydney's late arriving summer (21c) at the moment. I can't get my thought straighten out today because this is not how I was taught in school. Looks like I don't even need to swap my flip flops and t-shirts for scarf and coats this winter. And I guess I can certainly forget about gloves. Earmuffs? what's that? they don't even exist in my dictionary!

My knowledge didn't betray me, the entire humankind did, and still do. After years of efforts we have all been putting into contributing global warming, can we at least ask ourselves to find out the climate crisis we are facing and then afterwards, feel the impact with your conscious. So you can decide to ACT on saving our mother earth or stand back and watch? Not asking you to be an environmental activist here, I believe even the most clueless bimbo would act on a good cause even for Fashion's sake! How about you get up now and grab a copy of Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth and come up with ideas to stop global warming to save yourself?

A PhD Dominatrix

An interesting encounter today to share. I was invited over by a friend to meet a sydney dominatrix with a PhD degree in adult education. The outspoken but yet discreet Mistress J has a meduim frame with short bright red dyed hair and baby pink highlights on her fringes. Behind the amazing appearance and well maintained figure of the 53-year-old mature woman is a strong and independent soul living her erotic life style the exact way she wanted.
"I just hate stupid people with a weak personality,'' Mistress J said. A formal university lecturer in Auckland turned dominatrix in Australia nine years ago got fed up with teaching and marking dull student papers, Mistress J is now fitting nicely into the local BDSM niche fulfilling kinky sexual tantasies of many successful Sydney middle class men.
"I don't do blood and feces,'' she said while leading us to her dungeon. It's about the size of a bedroom but decorated with a torture station and kinky adult novelties. Hanging on her black wall were different types of handcuffs, rubber and leather whips, collars, climps, BDSM jewellery, ball and chains...u name it, she has it. I run out of the descriptive words, you need to see it for yourself. Too bad I didn't bring a camera, it would be a bloody eye-opening photo essay. I can only tell you it's a world of kinky sexual fantasies that I have yet begun imagining.
